يُعرّف اليتيم في اللُغة بأنّه من فقد أباه، ويُقال: أيتمت المرأة إذا صار أولادها أيتاماً، وجاء عن ابن منظور أنّ اليُتم هو الانفراد، وقيل: إنّ أصل اليُتم الغفلة؛ لأنّ اليتيم يُتغافل عن بِرّه، وقيل: من البُطء؛ لأنّ البرّ يُبطؤ عنه، وتبقى المرأة يتيمةً حتى تتزوّج، وجاء عن ابن الأثير أنّ اليُتم قد يظلّ يُطلق على الإنسان حتى وهو كبيرٌ بعد البلوغ، فقد كانوا يُسمّون النبي -عليه الصلاة والسلام- وهو كبيرٌ بيتيم أبي طالب؛ بسبب تربيته له بعد موت أبيه.
ويُعرّف اليتيم في الشرع بأنّه من مات أبوه قبل البُلوغ، أما بعد البُلوغ فيسقط عنه لفظ اليتيم، لقول النبي -عليه الصلاة والسلام-: (لا يُتْمَ بعدَ احتِلامٍ)، وذكر بعض العُلماء أنّ المعنى المقصود بلفظ اليتامى في قوله -تعالى-: (وَآتُوا الْيَتَامَى أَمْوَالَهُمْ)؛ هو الصّفة التي كانوا عليها قبل البُلوغ.
وإطلاق لفظ اليتيم على الإنسان يكون المعنى مَن فقد أباه، وإطلاقه على الأنعام بمعنى مَن فقد أمّه؛ لأنّها هي التي تُربّي وتُرضع، وإطلاقه على الطير بمعنى مَن فقد أباه وأمّه؛ فمِن عادة الطير أن يألف الزوجين كُلاً منهُما الآخر، فيقومان معاً بتربية صغارهم،
وقد اهتمّ الإسلام باليتيم وبتربيته، وراعى جوانبه النفسيّة والماديّة بعد فقده لأبيه، فقد يشعر بشيءٍ من القهر أو الانكسار، قال -تعالى-: (فَأَمَّا الْيَتِيمَ فَلَا تَقْهَرْ)، وحثّ الإسلام على كفالة اليتيم والاهتمام به، وعندما كان يشتكي أحد الصحابة من قسوة قلبه، كان يحثّه النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- على مسح رأس اليتيم.
