To err is human. We have repeatedly heard this saying, which is probably why we often forget how to correct our mistakes. As Muslims, we must recognize our sins and repent. Through the Holy Quran and Ahadith, Allah (SWT) has provided us with several powerful prayers to seek forgiveness and mercy.The doors of repentance and Allah’s Mercy are always open. We shouldn’t only seek forgiveness for sins we’re consciously aware of. Rather, we must repent and seek mercy for the sins we have committed unknowingly, as well. Here are some Duas for forgiveness that we can recite:
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِر لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ.
Allahumma anta rabbee la ilaha illa ant, khalaqtanee wa-ana AAabduk, wa-ana AAala AAahdika wawaAAdika mas-tataAAt, aAAoothu bika min sharri ma sanaAAt, aboo-o laka biniAAmatika AAalay, wa-aboo-o bithanbee, faghfir lee fa-innahu la yaghfiruth-thunooba illa ant.
O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You, You created me and I am Your servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I have committed. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.
Al-Bukhari 7:150
اللّهُـمَّ إِنَّـي أَسْـأَلُـكَ بِرَحْمَـتِكَ الّتي وَسِـعَت كُلَّ شيء، أَنْ تَغْـفِرَ لِي
Allaahumma ‘innee ‘as’aluka birahmatikal-latee wasi’at kulla shay’in ‘an taghfira lee
O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, which encompasses all things, that You forgive me.
Ibn Majah: 1753
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْماً كَثِيراً، وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ وَارْحَمْنِي إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
Allaahumma ‘innee dhalamtu nafsee dhulman katheeran, wa laa yaghfiruth-thunooba ‘illaa ‘Anta, faghfir lee maghfiratan min ‘indika warhamnee ‘innaka ‘Antal-Ghafoorur-Raheem
O Allah, I have greatly wronged myself and no one forgives sins but You. So, grant me forgiveness and have mercy on me. Surely, you are Forgiving, Merciful.
An-Nasa’i: 1303, Al-Bukhari: 834, 6326, 7387, 7388
رَبِّ اغْفِـرْ لي، وَتُبْ عَلَـيَّ، إِنَّكَ أَنْـتَ التَّـوّابُ الغَـفُورُ
Rabbighfir lee wa tub ‘alayya ‘innaka ‘Antat-Tawwaabul-Ghafoor
My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance, You are the Ever-Relenting, the All-Forgiving.
At-Tirmidhi: 3434 and Abu Dawud: 1516
Dua For forgiveness
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْلَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الخَاسِرِينَ
Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be lost.
Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa-in lam taghfir lana wa-tarhamna la-nakunanna minal-khasirin
(Surah Al-A’raf, 7:23)
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Glory be to Allah (Allah is free from imperfection), and I begin with praising Him. I beg forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance.
Subhaana-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Astaghfirullaha, wa atuubu ilaihi
(Sahih Muslim)
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مَنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَاَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ، لَا أُحصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ
O Allah, I seek protection in Your pleasure from Your anger, and I seek protection in Your forgiveness from Your punishment. I seek protection in You from You. I cannot count Your praises. You are as You have praised Yourself.
Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu biridhaaka min sakhatika, wa bimu’aafaatika min ‘uqoobatika wa ‘a’oothu bika minka, laa ‘uhsee thanaa’an ‘alayka ‘Anta kamaa ‘athnayta ‘alaa nafsika

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْلَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفُ رَّحِيم
Our Lord! Forgive us and our fellow believers who preceded us in faith, and do not allow any resentments into our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! Indeed, You are Ever Gracious, Most Merciful.
Rabbana-ghfir lana wa li ikhwaninal-laziina sabaquuna bil-iman, wa laa taj-al fii quluubina ghillal-lil lazina aamanuu, rabbanaa innaka raufur-rahim
(Surah Al-Hashr, 59:10)
Dua for forgiveness, removal of misdeeds and to join the righteous when we die
رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الأَبْرَارِ
Our Lord! Forgive our sins, remove from us our misdeeds, and grant that we join the righteous when we die.
Rabbana fa-ghfir lana zunuubana wa-kaffir anna sayyi-aatina wa-tafawwafaa maal-abrar
(Surah Ali Imran, 3:193)
