Many Muslims do their best to believe that the evil eye does not exist. Maybe because on a logical level, believing such may translate to believing that there is something more powerful than Allah (swt). But as the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) has been narrated to have said in a hadith: “The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye” (Muslim). The Prophet’s Dua for Children

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek the protection of Allah for Al-Hassan and Al- Hussain with this duaá, which means

I seek protection for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every envious blameworthy eye.

It is advisable to say this dua over your children in the morning and evening, till they are of age and able to learn it themselves.

Protecting with Al-Mauzatain

Al-Mauzatain (المعوذتان:) An Arabic term meaning ‘The Verses Of Refuge‘ comprised of two Surahs, Surah Falaq and Surah Nas, together these surahs are very powerful. Ibn Al Qayyam has highlighted the power of these Surahs, he said: “The effectiveness of these surahs is great to repel magic, evil eye, and the rest of the evils and the need for a slave to seek Allah’s protection from these two surahs is greater than his need for self, eating, drinking, and wearing a dress”

Aisha RA has narrated:

When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed every night, he would hold his hands together and blow into them and recite into them Qul Huwa Allah Ahad, Qul a’oodhu bi Rabb il-falaq and Qul a’oodhu bi Rabb in-nas. Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times. BUKHARI

Protect Your Kids with Ayat-ul-Kursi

Ayatul Kursi, another very important set of verses found in Surah Baqarah. Try to incoporate this in the dhikr at night and blow over your child, till he has learned himself. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

When you go to your bed, recite Ayatul Kursi for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn. MUSLIM

Keeping children inside at the time of Maghrib is not a myth or an old wives tale. The Prophet ﷺ recommended not allowing children out near the time of Maghrib,

When night falls, keep your children indoors, for the devils are out and about at this time. When an hour of the night goes by, you can let them go. BUKHARI

It means after an hour of darkness has passed then children should be allowed to go outside. The Shayateen spread out at this time and hang on to anything they can and since children can’t make dhikr on their own they become vulnerable, so it is better to keep them inside as mentioned in the Sunnah.

“I seek protection for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every envious blameworthy eye.”

(Jami’ At-Tirmizi)

In this Dua, we seek protection from Allah s.w.t. against the devils, any poisonous creature, as well as the evil eye, which is a misfortune or harm that is caused by the sight of a person out of envy or jealousy. The Prophet s.a.w. warned us about the evil eye, especially towards our own self.

“If one of you sees something from his brother, or in himself, or in his wealth which impresses him, then supplicate for it to be blessed with. Verily, the evil eye of envy is true”

(Musnad Ahmad)

Therefore, when we happen to come across something that impresses us, we should mention the name of Allah and make supplications for it to be blessed with.
